How to pick the right shocks for your truck
Shocks are sized for how far each end of the truck sits from stock height. Lowering a truck compresses the shocks at ride height, so a stock shock can bottom out and ride harsh. Lifting stretches them, so a stock shock can top out. The fix is a shock made for your exact ride height at each end.
Three steps
- Pick your ride height: lowered, stock, leveled or lifted.
- Pick your truck: year, make and model. Your saved truck fills in automatically.
- Pick your drop or lift for the front and rear, written front/rear in inches (a 2/4 drop is 2" front, 4" rear).
The finder then lists every shock that fits, grouped into Value, Premium and Best, with how many you need.
Good to know
- Drop spindles keep the factory suspension travel, so spindle-only front drops often use stock-height or "spindle" shocks.
- Drop coils, torsion keys, shackles and flip kits reduce travel and need drop shocks.
- Most shocks are sold each: order two per axle unless the listing says pair or set.
Shock Finder FAQ
What shocks do I need for a 2/4 drop?
You need a front shock sized for a 2" drop and a rear shock sized for a 4" drop. If your 2" front drop comes from drop spindles only, the front suspension travel doesn't change, so many trucks use a stock-height or "spindle" front shock. Pick Lowered above, then your truck and 2" front / 4" rear, and the finder lists the exact part numbers.
What shocks do I need for a 4/6 drop?
A front shock for a 4" drop (usually spindles plus drop coils) and a rear shock for a 6" drop (usually a flip kit). Many brands sell these as a front and rear set. Rear drops this big also usually need a C-notch.
Do drop shocks lower my truck?
No. Drop shocks are shorter so they work correctly on a truck that is already lowered with spindles, coils, shackles or a flip kit. They don't change ride height on their own.
Can I keep my stock shocks after lowering?
For a spindle-only front drop, often yes. For drop coils, torsion keys, rear drops of about 3" or more, and any flip kit, you need drop shocks. Stock shocks will bottom out and ride harsh.
What's the difference between Value, Premium and Best shocks?
Value shocks (Belltech Nitro Drop 2, MaxTrac, Trekline) give a comfortable daily ride for the money. Premium shocks (Belltech Street Performance and Trail Performance, ReadyLift and most struts) are tighter and more controlled. Best shocks (QA1, Aldan American, RideTech) are adjustable, so you can tune the ride.
Are shocks sold each or in pairs?
Most shocks are sold individually, so you need two per axle. Sets and pairs say so in the name. The finder shows how many to add to your cart.
What shocks do I need for a leveling kit or lift?
Leveling kits of about 2" or less often work with factory shocks. Bigger lifts need longer lift shocks sized for your lift height at each end. Pick Leveled or Lifted above to see them.
