What a C-notch does

On a heavily lowered truck, the rear axle sits so close to the frame that it can hit it over bumps. A C-notch cuts out a section of the frame above the axle and bolts or welds in a curved, reinforced notch, giving the axle several extra inches of clearance while keeping the frame strong.

  • Usually needed for rear drops of about 5" and up, including most flip kits.
  • Bolt-in notches are easier; weld-in notches are the strongest.
  • Check that your bed has room above the notch, or use a notch with bed access.

Rear C-Notch Kits and Frame Reinforcement FAQ

Does a C-notch weaken the frame?

No, when installed correctly. The notch is reinforced and is often stronger than the original section.

Do I need to remove the bed?

Many installs are easier with the bed off, but some notches can go in with the bed on through an access hole. Check the instructions.

At what drop do I need a C-notch?

Most trucks need one at about 5" of rear drop and beyond. Your kit listing will say.
