Hangers vs. shackles

Leaf springs mount to the frame with a fixed hanger in front and a swinging shackle in back. Drop hangers raise the front mount point and drop shackles raise the rear, lowering the truck 1-3". Used together they give a level drop; paired with a flip kit they fine-tune bigger drops.

  • Use drop shocks for 2" and bigger rear drops.
  • Replace old shackle bushings while you're in there.
  • Check pinion angle on drops of 3" or more.

How much do drop shackles lower a truck?

Most drop the rear 1-2". Shackles plus hangers together give 2-3".

Do drop shackles change the ride?

Very little. The springs are unchanged, so ride quality stays close to stock.

Can I use shackles with a flip kit?

Yes. It's a common way to go from a 5" or 6" flip to 7".
