Why lowered trucks need drop shocks

When you lower a truck, the shock is compressed shorter at ride height. A stock shock can bottom out internally, ride harsh, and wear out fast. Drop shocks are shorter so they keep their full travel at the new height.

Pick by your drop

Shocks are matched to how far each end drops. For example, a 4/6 truck needs a front shock for a 4" drop and a rear shock for a 6" drop. The Shock Finder does the math for your truck.

Value, Premium and Best

  • Value: Belltech Nitro Drop 2, MaxTrac and Trekline. Great ride for the money.
  • Premium: Belltech Street Performance. Tighter, more controlled ride.
  • Best: QA1, Aldan and RideTech adjustable shocks and coilovers, for trucks that get driven hard.

Drop spindles keep the factory front geometry, so many spindle-only drops use a stock-height or mild-drop front shock. Always go by your parts' notes.

Drop Shocks and Performance Struts FAQ

Do I need new shocks if I lower my truck 2 inches?

For a 2" front drop with spindles, stock-length shocks usually work. For coil drops, rear drops of 3" or more, or any flip kit, drop shocks are strongly recommended.

What's the difference between Nitro Drop 2 and Street Performance?

Both are Belltech drop shocks. Nitro Drop 2 is the budget option with a comfortable daily ride. Street Performance uses a larger, better-valved design for a tighter ride and better control.

Are shocks sold in pairs?

Most are sold individually, so order two per axle. Each listing says "sold each" or "pair", and the Shock Finder shows how many to add.

Can I use lift shocks on a lowered truck?

No. Lift shocks are longer and will bottom out on a lowered truck.
