How to lower a truck: the parts, in plain English

Every lowered truck needs two things: a way to drop the front and a way to drop the rear. Most drops are described as front/rear, like 2/4 or 4/6. The front is usually lowered with drop spindles, drop coils, lowering control arms or torsion keys. The rear is lowered with shackles and hangers (1-3"), lowering springs, or an axle flip kit (5-7").

What else you'll need

  • Shocks: shorter drop shocks keep the ride right and stop the shocks from bottoming out. Use our Shock Finder.
  • C-notch: bigger rear drops (usually 5" and up) need a C-notch so the axle doesn't hit the frame.
  • Bump stops: low-profile bump stops keep some travel after the drop.
  • Alignment: every lowered truck needs an alignment. Big drops may need camber kits.

Kit or parts?

A complete lowering kit is the easiest path: the parts are matched for your truck and drop. Buying parts separately lets you mix brands or build a drop that no kit offers.

Lowered Suspension Kits and Components FAQ

What does a 2/4 or 4/6 drop mean?

The first number is how many inches the front drops, the second is the rear. A 2/4 drops the front 2" and the rear 4". Most trucks sit with the rear higher from the factory, so a bigger rear drop levels the truck out.

Will lowering my truck ruin the ride?

Not with the right parts. Drop spindles keep the factory springs and ride. Matching drop shocks to your drop is the biggest factor in ride quality, which is why we list the right shocks for every kit.

Do I need an alignment after lowering?

Yes. Any change to ride height changes camber and toe. Get an alignment right after install to avoid tire wear.

Can I still tow or haul after lowering?

Light towing is usually fine on mild drops. Big rear drops reduce suspension travel, so add helper bags or choose a milder drop if you tow often.
